How to eat flaxseed? Is the oil made from flax or flaxseed?

What's the difference between the two? In the food and cosmetics industries, there's no difference — both terms refer to the same thing.

In English, we use linseeds and flaxseeds interchangeably.

In the UK, both "flax" and "flaxseed" are used, whereas in the United States and Canada, the term "flax" is more commonly used to describe both.

Omega-3 and Fibre – The Power Hidden in Flaxseeds

Flaxseed is an incredibly versatile food that can work wonders internally and externally.

Whether consumed whole or ground, it supports the digestive system thanks to its high content of omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as two types of fibre – soluble and insoluble.

Let’s also not forget the presence of lignans – plant compounds that belong to the phytoestrogen group, found in large amounts in flaxseed and known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

How to Use Flaxseed in Everyday Life? Is ground better than whole?

Flaxseed is available on the market in whole seed, ground, and oil forms. All of these forms offer health benefits.

It’s worth noting that consuming too much flaxseed (more than 4 tablespoons a day) may negatively affect digestion and interfere with the absorption of medications. That’s why it is recommended to wait at least 1 hour after consuming flaxseed before taking any medication.

How Much Flaxseed Daily? Safe Dosage Guidelines

Ground flaxseed can be added to smoothies, shakes, cookies, yoghurt, and more. However, keep in mind that the fatty acids in flaxseed oxidise quickly, so it is best to buy whole seeds and grind small portions (enough for 1–3 days) yourself, for example, in a coffee grinder.

Ground flaxseed should be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container and used within 3 days. It is also not recommended to heat flaxseeds, as this can break down the omega-3 fatty acids.

When soaked in hot water, flaxseeds release a special gel that can soothe irritated skin and also serve as a humectant base for hair treatments.

This is a multi-purpose product that’s perfect for daily use – an absolute must-have in every kitchen and bathroom.
